Peagi saab valmis ka Euroopa navigatsioonisüsteem, mis võimaldab kasutada juba satelliite, mis ei kuulu vaid USA sõjaväele ja kindlasti suurendab see veelgi täpsust ja ligipääsetavust.

Ligipääsetavus tähendab seda, et GPS-seade ei pruugi alati olla võimeline asukohta määrama — satelliidid on kõrgel maa kohal kosmoses ja kui ette jääb takistusi, mis otsenähtavust segavad, võib täpse asukoha määramine ebaõnnestuda. Tavaliselt ei suuda lihtsad GPS-seadmed satelliitide signaale vastu võtta suurtes majades või paksu metsa all. Kus neid kasutatakse? GPS-seadmeid kasutatakse nii maal, õhus kui vees, võib öelda.

Luksuslikumatel autodel ja maasturitel võib GPS-süsteem juba sisse ehitatud olla, ehkki Eestis on sellest vähe kasu: autodele pole Eesti kohta piisavalt täpseid kaarte, et siinkandis ringi sõites navigatsiooniseadmest kasu võiks olla. Kui päästeteenistustest rääkida, siis GPS on tihti abiks ka abivajajateni jõudmisel ja ise abi vajades on kõige täpsemini võimalik oma asukohta päästjatele öelda, kui kaasas juhtub olema GPS-seade, mis koordinaadid annab.

Näiteks mägedes või merel võivad geograafilised koordinaadid olla ainus kindel pidepunkt. Jahtidel ja väikelaevadel on GPS vägagi levinud. Seal kasutatakse enamasti spetsiaalseid mere-GPSe, mis näitavad asukohta merekaardil ja on ühendatavad teiste pardaseadmetega. Täpsus pole viimastel aga kuigi suur. Klassikaline GPS-seade, mis enamikul juhtudel asja ära ajab, on aga n. Ekraanil on mitu režiimi, mis kuvavad kaarti, kompassi, koordinaate või muud asukohainfot.

Urbaniseerunud linnakodanikule võib GPSist suurlinnas abi olla kasvõi näiteks oma auto ülesleidmisel parklast või lähima teenindusasutuse leidmisel, kui see info on GPSi varem salvestatud. Võimalused on piiramatud ka äris: transport ja logistika, aga ka põllumajandus, ehitus ning turism kasutavad aina enam asukohamääramist. Mida nad teevad? Vaatame, mida üks lihtne käsi-GPS siis teha suudab. Kasutada on neid seadmeid lihtne ja väga palju toodetavad mudelid üksteisest ei erinegi. Tavaliselt on GPSil mitu ekraanirežiimi, kust saab asukoha-infot.

Neid vastava nupu abil vahetades saab teada, kus asuvad ja kui palju on satelliite silmapiiril ning milliste signaal GPS-seadmeni jõuab. Vähemalt kolme satelliiti on vaja, et oma asukoht kindlaks teha. Ajaarvestus on enamusel GPSidel samuti olemas. Lisaks kellaajale saab teada, mis kell tõuseb ja loojub päike ning kuu antud geograafilises punktis, kui palju aega kulub valitud sihtpunkti jõudmiseks ja mitu meetrit sihtpunktini on jäänud tavaliselt saab selle küll teada vaid linnulennult arvestatuna.

Koordinaadid saab teada laius- ja pikkuskraadidena, Eesti ja Euroopa asub põhjapoolkeral, kus asukoht määratakse põhjalaiuse ja idapikkusena, nagu on seletatud juba kooli geograafiaõpikutes.

Valida saab erinevaid formaate, üks levinuimaid on WGS84 kraadide ja minutitena. Kraadid, minutid ja sekundid on kasutatavad ka täpsetel matkakaartidel, nii et kui GPS ise kaarti ei näita, saab reisija saadud numbrite põhjal joonlauaga tööd tehes oma asukoha ka paberkaardile kanda, kui koordinaadid käes. Peale laius- ja pikkuskraadide on enamusel GPSidest olemas ka võimalus oma kõrgust merepinnast mõõta. Odavamad mudelid näitavad ka suunda ilmakaarte suhtes, kuid ainult liikudes, kallimatel mudelitel on sisse ehitatud elektrooniline kompass, mis näitab suunda isegi paigal olles.

Kompassile on kantud veel päikese ja kuu suund, mis aitab paremini ümbruses orienteeruda. Kaart on GPSides uus asi. Eriti uus aga Eesti kasutajatele, sest vaid mõne aasta on olnud võimalik kasutada käsi-GPSi koos Eesti kaardiga. Selle valmistajaks on Eesti tuntuim kaarditootja Regio. Kuna turg on väike, siis Eesti kaart on üsna kallis — ligi krooni.

Sülearvutiga ühendades aga saab asukohamääramisega kaasa ka kõikvõimalikud vastava tarkvara võimalused. Eesti kaart on jällegi olemas Regiol, seal on GPSiga ühendades võimalik näha oma teekonda ja hetkeasukohta.
